This year the English Championships will be taking place on Sunday 28th March at a NEW VENUE - the International Centre at Telford! Grandmaster C.K. Choi Seminar
The West of England C.K. Choi seminar took place on Sunday 28th February at the Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, Weston Super Mare. Hundreds of coloured and black belt students travelled from all over the west country to train with Grandmaster C.K. Choi.
It was good to meet and train with one of the original TaeKwon-Do pioneers, the man himself was very approachable as you can see from this photo with Mark Randall, Emma Clatworthy, C.K. Choi, Sam Haynes, Elizabeth Hutchinson and Ian Hutchinson. Large group photos were taken on the day and will be available shortly from the TAGB website.

Summer Camps - application forms
It is now time to get your applications forms back to us for this year's summer camps!
Junior Camp The ever popular Kids Summer Camp this year is taking place in July BEFORE the adult summer camp on Friday 23rd - Sunday 25th July. The camp takes place at Chelwood near Bath. There are only 100 places available on this camp - and the first 50 have already been booked, so you need to get your skates on! This is a fun camp where kids get the opportunity to mix with other TaeKwon-Do students from across the West of England, train (of course!), play games and all the other fun things that go along with being away on a weekend camp! Your child will need to bring a roll mat and sleeping bag, all the necessary clothing etc. and if they have a tent please bring it (if not sharing will be organised).
The kids camp costs £60 per child, this includes all food and campsite fees. You will need to make your own arrangements to get your child to and from the camp ground.
Click here to download the kids camp application form - the form and money needs to be returned to Mr Martin ASAP to ensure a place.
Adult Camp The West of England summer camp has now been running for some 31 years! We use a site on a cricket field next to the sports club at Veryan in cornwall. Veryan is a quiet village (except when we arrive!) in the Roseland Peninsula area of Cornwall - one of the most scenic and quietest areas of the county. The site has the benefit of hot showers, kitchen facilities and the club bar. You will be required to bring your own tent (a small number of caravans are allowed but these must be pre-booked in advance). You will also have to cater for yourself - although an Asda breakfast and pub dinner seems to work for many!

Camp starts on Saturday 31st July with most people arriving between 2pm and 6pm. Our training starts on Sunday morning. At our initial briefing (usually Saturday night around 7:30pm) we discuss the week's training, including start times (!). These will often vary depending very much on the weather, as hopefully all the training is done outdoors. We usually train for about 2 to 2.5 hours in the morning and the same in the evening. The remainder of the time is yours to explore the area and do as you please.
On the last night, Friday 6th August, we have a disco in the club bar and we break camp some time on the Saturday - when the alcohol levels have subsided!
Tracksuits or t-shirts and shorts are the dress for the morning sessions, with training shoes and occasionally swimming costumes! However, white doboks are to be worn for the evening sessions. We usually have a grading on the Friday, but only for those who are eligible and proficient enough to grade.
All in all this is a great opportunity to enjoy your TaeKwon-Do with fellow students without the stresses of everyday life. A good, if somewhat energetic, break from your normal routine. The camp costs £80 (or £60 for non-training guests).
Interested? If you are 16 or over then click here to download the application form - and return it with the money to Mr Martin ASAP to ensure your place.
Coloured Belt Grading 20th January
This was set to be a not-as-good-as-usual grading - everything was against us; the Christmas break (and lack of training that goes with it!) and then of course there was the snow, which prevented so many of us training during that first week back in January. HOWEVER! The standard at the grading was again very high - you all passed! With 23 of the 60 grading gaining A passes, and another 7 above average 'plus' passes - so that's 50% with above average passes!
The grading awards this time went to Elisha Bogle for Bristol South and James Robertson for Bristol North (gaining his black tags). I was particularly impressed with both Elisha and James's spirit which on top of everything else is what made these two shine out on the night. Well done to all of you.

Congratulations to everybody who took the October black belt grading. You all passed! The standard, particularly of the youngsters, was high. I particularly enjoyed watching Ned Armstrong's grading, he was almost faultless with power and confidence far beyond his years. I am pleased to see my two assistant instructors Fran and Mike Chapman achieve their first Dan's.
Commiserations
to Jake Grimes who managed to break his foot kicking a wall (?!) two
days before the grading (twerp!). I am confident that in April I will be
giving you your black belt, as long as you can stay away from walls....
I'd also like to congratulate my friend and colleague
Mr Alec Hay on being awarded his sixth Dan. I am proud of all of you.
We still have a few kids hoodies in stock - hurry as they're selling fast! Our additional order has now arrived so we have a few more kids sizes in stock. Any adults now wanting one please give us an order form and once we have enough orders we will endeavour to get you one - our manufacturers have a minimum order of 10!

West of England Championships 2010
This year's West of England Championships took place on Saturday 13th February at the Torbay Leisure Centre.
The day was a very good day for our clubs. If you don't know it by now, you must have been out of the country or dead; first place was split three ways between three clubs - Master Dew's TaeKwon-Do Academy, and Bristol North and Bristol South! What an achievement! A few people have suggested to me that Bristol North and Bristol South must have been added together and counted as one club to do so well - BUT NO! Each one did it as a separate identity. Of 23 people competing from our clubs on the day, 21 came home with medals.
Particular congratulations from me to Miss Nicky Raw on achieving silver in both patterns and sparring and of course to everybody that got gold. But for me the man of the day was Mrs Emma Clatworthy! She achieved gold in blue belt ladies heavyweight sparring, after facing what seemed certain defeat in the final when she was already down on points and was put to the ground hard with a kick, she got back up looking dazed, beaten and hurt. She walked over to the line, stepped back in to fighting stance, ki-huped, and then soundly defeated her opponent! This demonstration of spirit, being beaten and feeling 'right, I'm not having that!' is what I would look for in every student. It shows that if you don't give up, no matter how difficult it seems, you can succeed (at ANYTHING!).
Our results as follows:
Emma Clatworthy, sparring GOLD
Jade Clatworthy, sparring GOLD
Mark Randall, sparring bronze
Helen Cave, sparring silver, patterns silver

British Championships 2009 results and photos
This year's British Championships took place in Cardiff on Sunday 22nd November. Everyone commented what a wonderful atmosphere it was, I think the Welsh venue makes for a good atmosphere and good feeling. Many people from our clubs did very well, gaining medals; we now have two new BRITISH CHAMPIONS!!

For me the 'man of the match' has to be Miss Bretherton (Lizzie B!) who gained gold at red belt middle weight. Her opponent in the final had attempted to intimidate her before the fight... Lizzie kept her cool, her opponent came out very aggressive but soon looked like she wished she was somewhere else! Lizzie ultimately defeated her with good hand combinations, driving her backwards. Give Lizzie her black belt and a couple years more training and I believe she will make a name for herself.
Special mention also to James Maggs for gaining gold at green belt heavyweight sparring. He commented afterwards, something along the lines of 'Lawks! They do hit hard there don't they!'.

Also congratulations to the black belt boys tag team of Kishore Moores, Ned Armstrong and Izzy Hart, gaining silver at their first black belt competition!
Results are as follows:
Alisa Cengic, yellow belt, bronze tag team sparring, silver sparring,
silver patterns (and it was her first tournament! Woohoo!)

Alanta Fielding, green belt, bronze sparring.
Becci Furness, yellow belt, bronze tag team sparring.

Isaac Hart, black belt, silver tag team sparring.
Noel Pollock, yellow belt, bronze tag team sparring.
Ned Armstrong, black belt, silver tag team sparring.
Kishore Moores, black belt, bronze sparring, silver tag team
sparring.
Helen Cave, green belt, bronze tag team sparring.

Well done to you all, you are a credit to the clubs and make me very proud! That's 20 of our 28 students entered that came home with a medal! Woohoo!

Two very proud young ladies sporting their Gold and Silver trophies!
Numbers in general were down on previous years for this tournament - possibly everyone is saving themselves for the British! Our representatives did us proud bringing home no less than 16 trophies between them (well, they ran out of trophies - oops! If you haven't had yours yet you will get it shortly!).
Special congratuations go to Alanta Fielding for getting her first (hopefully of many!) gold at competition.
A big congratulations to Craig Noble for fighting very very well and showing lots of promise for the future.
And lastly but definitely not least, a very BIG well done to Kishore Moores for his gold at sparring - nobody took a point off him at all in the whole competition - a fitting end to his coloured belt career and we look forward to seeing great things from him in the future!
Oh, and I should mention Mr Martin regaining his Southern Champion Hand Destruction title - honour has been restored to the Martin household!! He was cheered on by some very loud supporters! He first broke a black and white board - matched only by one other competitor, then went on to break with the other hand, this time breaking just the black board (the white went flying!) which the other competitor failed to break, returning Mr Martin to his rightful place!! Yeah!
These are special TaeKwon-Do session in which the focus moves away from both Syllabus (grading) work, and from sport style sparring. The focus is instead on TaeKwon-Do for self defence in realistic situations.
We cover self defence drills (partnered work), self defence techniques, applications of moves from Tae Kwon-Do patterns in realistic situations, take-downs, throws, grappling techniques, knees/elbows and low kicking etc. etc.

Photo from a session in October 2008 hosted by
Mr Alec Hay in Creech St. Michael.
Comment from Mr Mark Lawler from Chard TaeKwon-Do about the above session: "Excellent lesson a must in my opinion for anyone wanting to take their tkd self defence to the next level. Look forward to attending more lessons in the future. Big thanks."
Quote from Mr Martin on the Applied Blog: "It has always been my intention to develop the patterns into a valid self defence supplement to our standard TaeKwon-Do training. For me this is good because it gives the patterns a depth and meaning beyond just being an exercise to get the next belt or as a form of TaeKwon-Do aerobics.
As ever, in this session I felt I ran out of time - we barely got beyond Chon-Ji! 23 more patterns to go...."
Next Applied Session date to be arranged (will be in April!)
