This will be a unique event in so many ways as we are welcoming Europe’s youth and providing the opportunity to compete in an international tournament at the fantastic Disneyland resort Paris.

This tournament will be held in the amazing Times Square Conference Centre in the heart of the spectacular Hotel New York, itself situated in the centre of the wonderful Disneyland resort Paris.  Also unique, will be the exclusive Disney medals and certificates, awards that will become treasured keepsakes.  This fantastic weekend really does offer the best of both worlds as our young competitors can compete against their international counterparts on the Saturday and then enjoy all the magic of Disneyland Paris resort, Europe’s number one attraction with its mix of heart-stopping thrills and fairy-tale magic, with their families on the Sunday.

All details and entry forms are now available on the TAGB website. CLOSING DATE FOR THIS EVENT: 1st August 2008. DON’T MISS IT!!!!

English Championships Results

Our clubs only had a handful of entrants for this years English Championships, held at the Nottingham Arena on Sunday March 30th, which is a shame because I keep telling you guys how GOOD you are! This years entrants however, proved my point, the five
(yes, five!) entrants returned with no less than five trophies between them! SEE, I TOLD YOU LOT YOU WERE GOOD, NOW DO YOU BELIEVE ME??!!!

This result is particularly impressive considering that the five that went would not be considered as 'tournament fighters'.  These are five normal people, average members of our clubs, except above average in that they made the effort and were brave enough to travel to Nottingham and step up to the line.

Phil Tanner from the Southville club achieved bronze in yellow belt cadet sparring, Simon Hart from Bradley Stoke club won gold in green belt heavyweight cadet sparring and a bronze in patterns, his Dad Adrian won silver in green belt executive male sparring
(old bugger!) which should be an inspiration to all of us, and finally Mrs Pam (I'm not very good at TaeKwon-Do am I) Dulay got gold at executive ladies blue belt heavyweight (?!) sparring.  The last competitor, Kat Hart unfortunately did not get anything this time, however she showed great warrior spirit in entering blue belt heavyweight ladies at a national level for the first time, where the opponents are large and the contact can be quite heavy, so well done to you too Kat - particularly for remaining cheerful in the face of the rest of her family coming home with trophies!

Southern Championships

The Southern Championships were held at the Torbay Leisure Centre in Paignton on Sunday 25th November 2007.  A coach was laid on which most of our participants took advantage of, I'm told of the party atmosphere in the coach on the way back! It was a very successful day with more of our competitors getting medals than not, and even some of the ones that did not achieved huge personal success - for instance Mandy Rossiter acquitting herself very well against an experienced and successful tournament fighter from Bristol Academy, Junho Scott giving his opponent a very tough fight, not knowing he was the current world champion, and both Jo Lougheed and Dillon Berry's awesome breaks in the destruction event;  Jo breaking two boards for the first time ever with an elbow strike and Dillon breaking three boards with a reverse side kick. Somebody got the gold for hand destruction as well, can't think who...

As many people got medals on the day, and I am proud of everybody for their performance and bravery, I will mention the gold medalists: Isaac Webb pleased me getting gold, Phil Tanner and Elisha Bogle both got gold in their first tournament beating yellow belt green stripe 7th kup opponents, these are obviously two names to watch for the future. Gianni Arancio getting gold and Rich Lang getting silver for the red belt male patterns was awesome, perhaps more of you should enter patterns, at least at local level. Congratulations also to the two ladies tag teams - Beckie Hodge and Anisha Dulay came away with Gold and Kate Millard, Pam Dulay and Katrina Hart came away with Silver.

I thought Aaron O'Callaghan's fight was awesome, he will be somebody to watch for the future (as long as he continues to take his training as seriously as he does now). The man of the match for me was Jason Everton getting gold at Black Belt men's sparring, this man could fight his way onto the England team. I was especially pleased that all three of the Dulay family came home with medals and their spirits high - a good start to their tournament career. I was totally proud of everybody and am planning to lay a coach on again in February to the next West of England championships in Salisbury.

Bradley Stoke Festival - Write Up

Saturday 7th June saw another of our annual demonstrations at the Bradley Stoke Festival. We were again very lucky with the weather, though thankfully it wasn't as hot as last year! Thanks to Adrian Hart for wrestling with the gazebo for us!

After a very spectacular (some would say completely crazy) display from a stunt motorcycle team had left several areas of the arena smouldering, we entered to face an even larger crowd than last year. We started with some quick warm up kicking then a few patterns, then straight into some one for one/two for two non contact (!) sparring, followed by some strenuous pad work. We've not used pads at a demo before, but I think it looked good and we'll probably use it again.

Then a few brave students went on to break some pretty impressively thick boards (I think they get thicker every time I buy them!) - some from students who had never even tried it before. Myself and Steve Schwartz then demonstrated some slow and fast one step sparring. This was swiftly followed by several bouts of sparring. We were to finish with a couple more patterns but yet again our time was cut short by an over zealous announcer ushering us off the arena (a little before our time in my opinion!)

After the demo we still had a large pile of unbroken wood, so we had an informal destruction seminar. Everybody broke, no-one was hurt, and I have a large pile of firewood to get me through next winter! Everyone was particularly blown away by Craig Noble: he asked if he could try breaking with a side kick, I asked if he would use his front leg and be prepared to jump? To his surprise, I got four volunteers to lie on the ground and suggested he jump over them and break... without batting an eyelid, he just did it! We then lay down six people.. and he did that as well! The photos are on the album. His nickname was 'Sonic', it is now 'Super Sonic'.

A big thank you to those who came along to take part, especially those who came up from the South Bristol clubs. There have been quite a few pictures posted on facebook (thanks to the Braid family) and of course you can see our pictures in the Photo Album. If anyone wants any high res copies, please email me.

Team Tournament Training

2008 is the TAGB’s Silver Jubilee year (25 years!) and to celebrate we are re-instating the area team championships at this year’s British Championships to be held on October 12th in Nottingham.

We are currently looking to select the finest students to represent the West of England; there will be teams for MEN, LADIES, BOYS and GIRLS.

There are special TEAM TOURNAMENT TRAINING sessions being held at the Bristol Academy – these sessions will not only improve your sparring skills and fitness, but you may end up being picked to represent YOUR AREA!

Next session is on Saturday 12th July at the
Bristol Academy, time is 10.00am to 12.00 noon.  The cost is £3 per student and it is open to all red and black belts, young and old alike. No need to book, just turn up in white suits, with sparring kit and be ready to train hard.

We particularly need the following fighters:
Lightweight ladies
Pee Wee boys and girls
Heavyweight girls

Black Belt Grading - Results

It will probably be no surprise to any of you that our latest batch of black belt wannabe's all passed their 1st Dan grading in April, with flying colours! Congratulations to new 1st Dan's: Aaron O'Callaghan, Craig Noble, Rich Lang, Neil Cullimore and Stabber McStab. There was never any doubt in my mind whilst watching their performance (even Stabber with his version of Joong gun) that they looked like black belts and would pass.

Big congratulations also go to Jo Lougheed for her promotion to 2nd Dan. In my opinion, the only people better than Jo were the young, fit, ultra "alpha" athletes.  She also demonstrated she has bigger balls than anyone else there! I don't remember any other women breaking with both hand and feet, which she did with style. And clobbering her opponent right in front of the table was awesome.

These guys all made me very proud, and clearly we are doing the right stuff! Yee haa!

P.S. Has anyone got a spare loo seat? We thought we'd enter Stabber for the next gurning competition...

Adult Summer Camp 2008

Are you aware that Summer Camp has been running for 29 years and has been sited in Veryan since 1991 (originally it was in Tresaith, Wales)?

Veryan is a quiet village (except when we arrive!) in the Roseland Peninsula area of Cornwall.  This is probably the most scenic and quietest area of the county.

Our site is on the cricket field, adjacent to the Veryan Sports Club and has the benefit of hot showers, kitchen facilities and the club bar.  You will be required to bring your own tent (a small number of caravans are allowed, but these must be pre-booked in advance).  You will also have to cater for yourself – although an Asda breakfast and pub dinner do seem to work for many!

Camp starts on Saturday 26th July with most people arriving between 2pm and 6pm.  Our training starts on Sunday morning.  At our initial briefing (usually Saturday night around 7.30pm) we discuss the week’s training, including start times.  These will often vary depending very much on the weather, as hopefully all the training is done outdoors.  We usually train for about 2 to 2½ hours in the morning and the same in the evening.  The remainder of the time is yours to explore the area and do as you please.

On the last night, Friday 1st August, we have a disco in the club bar and we break camp some time on the Saturday – when the alcohol levels have subsided.

Tracksuits or t-shirts and shorts are the dress for the morning sessions, with training shoes and occasionally swimming costumes!  However, white doboks are to be worn for the evening sessions.  We usually have a grading on the Friday, but only for those who are eligible and proficient enough to grade.

All in all this is a great opportunity to enjoy your Tae Kwon-Do with fellow students without the stresses of everyday life.  A good, if somewhat energetic, break from your normal routine.

Interested? If you are 16 or over then click here to download an application form. Applications must be with Mr Martin by the end of June.

Applied TaeKwon-Do Sessions

We have now started up these new sessions in which the focus will move away from both Syllabus (grading) work, and from sport style sparring.  The focus will instead be only on TaeKwon-Do for self defence in realistic situations.

We are aiming (where holidays and competitions don't get in the way) to hold these sessions once a month, on a Saturday morning in the Southville Community Centre.

We cover self defence drills (partnered work), self defence techniques, applications of moves from Tae Kwon-Do patterns in realistic situations, take-downs, throws, grappling techniques, knees/elbows and low kicking etc. etc.

Next session date: Saturday 5th April, 10am - 12pm, Southville Community Centre.

Check out http://www.appliedtaekwondo.com for my blog about the new Applied TaeKwon-Do Sessions! Leave your comments too!
