TaeKwon-Do Summer Camps 2012
Adult Summer Camp
Ever considered going to the West of England TaeKwon-Do summer camp? A week of camping with fellow like-minded people, two daily training sessions with lots of highly qualified instructors from all over the West of England, set in some of the most beautiful scenery the UK has to give!

A brilliant but hard week, expect a couple of blisters and some aching limbs, but also expect to meet and make some great new friends - by the end of the week you won't want to go home; it really is such an inspiring week for every grade to partake in from black belts to white belts.
The instructors on the camp teach in their own unique style and of course Mr Dew puts you through your paces also. The training is varied, challenging and fun!
We use a site on a cricket field next to the sports club at Veryan in cornwall. Veryan is a quiet village (except when we arrive!) in the Roseland Peninsula area of Cornwall - one of the most scenic and quietest areas of the county.
Camp starts on Saturday 28th July with most people arriving between 2pm and 6pm. Our training starts on Sunday morning. At our initial briefing (usually Saturday night around 7:30pm) we discuss the week's training, including start times (!). These will often vary depending very much on the weather, as hopefully all the training is done outdoors. We usually train for about 2 hours in the morning and the same in the evening. The remainder of the time is yours to explore the area and do as you please, although:-
Tuesday night will be quiz night, Wednesday morning we go for a long walk along the beautiful Cornish coastline (hence the need for decent walking shoes and waterproofs!), Thursday afternoon we hold a sports day that includes volleyball, baseball/rounders and tug of war (no training that night!).
On the last night, Friday 3rd August, we have a disco in the club bar and we break camp some time on the Saturday - when the alcohol levels have subsided!
Tracksuits or t-shirts and shorts are the dress for the morning sessions, with training shoes and occasionally swimming costumes! However, white doboks are to be worn for the evening sessions. We usually have a grading on the Friday, but only for those who are eligible and proficient enough to grade.
The site has the benefit of hot showers, kitchen facilities and the club bar. You will need to bring:-
- A tent that can last the week - we may have a drop or two of rain so it's needed to keep you and your equipment dry (a small number of caravans are allowed but these must be pre-booked in advance).
- Sleeping bag/roll mat etc.
- Camp cooking/eating equipment
- A good pair of comfortable running shoes as we do occassionally run from time to time.
- Walking boots and waterproofs are advised.
- Swimming costumes because we often visit the local beaches in the mornings for some training.
- Your dobok (and a spare if possible), belt and sparring gear.
- Food - you will have to cater for yourself - although an Asda breakfast and pub dinner seems to work for many!
- A sense of humour and all your tenets in abundance.
Preparation: In all seriousness you will need to prepare for the jogs to the beach in the morning by getting in some miles before camp starts, you will be jogging approx 4 miles a day so prepare yourself by getting out there and wearing in those trainers! If you can't run now, you will be able to after camp! Running seems to be a large part of everyone's experience at Summer Camp!
Cherie Townsend, Bristol South student, said of last year's camp: "What an experience. As I was not fit last year I was shocked at the support you get from your team buddies, everyone wants you do well, everyone supports you. I thought I would just be pushed until I dropped, instead I got so much support I pushed myself till I dropped!!! I would recommend TKD camp to anyone at any level of fitness and at TKD. I will be going back."
"I would say take a big tent, bigger than you need, for one person at least a 4 man tent. Hiking shoes. Rain coat for hike. Enough undies as you train in the sea at least 4 times in that week. (?!) Food to last, there is a kitchen to use. Also Asda is not too far away. Dobok. Last but not least a smile. Please remember you train in the sea, so you will need about double the clothes, t shirts and such."
"I went last year knowing no one. I drove 4 hours alone with no radio and got stuck in traffic. I walked in alone. I left camp knowing everyone, [everyone was] very friendly and very supportive. Everyone at every level talks to you and helps you. It was fun talking to people before you saw them in their doboks and had no idea of their grade. I loved it and I will be going every year I can. When my children are old enough they too want to participate."
All in all this is a great opportunity to enjoy your TaeKwon-Do with fellow students without the stresses of everyday life. A good, if somewhat energetic, break from your normal routine. The camp costs £85 (or £65 for non-training guests, £45 for non-training child aged 6 - 15years, under 5s free; all will receive a t-shirt apart from under 5s for whom one can be purchased for £6). Please note those aged 16/17 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

The ever popular Kids Summer Camp is taking place in 2012 on Friday 10th - Sunday 12th August. The camp takes place at Huish Woods, West Hatch, Taunton, Somerset, TA3 5RH and is open to currently training and licenced students aged 8 - 12 years. There are only 100 places available on this camp and it always gets booked up VERY quickly, so you need to get your skates on! This is a fun camp where kids get the opportunity to mix with other TaeKwon-Do students from across the West of England, train (of course!), play games and all the other fun things that go along with being away on a weekend camp! Your child will need to bring a roll mat and sleeping bag, all the necessary clothing etc. and if they have a tent please bring it (if not sharing will be organised).
The kids camp costs £70 per child, this includes all food and campsite fees plus a commemorative t-shirt. You will need to make your own arrangements to get your child to and from the camp ground.
