TAGB TaeKwon-Do International World Championships 2010

Some of our crew before the fighting commenced!

The world championships... wow!! The atmosphere in the TAGB's new tournament venue (Telford International Centre) was exceptional. We had over thirty competitors entered from our clubs, this was a lot more than many of my fellow instructors entered. I entered destruction myself, I didn't win anything except a very sore hand! However, lots of my students did bring home medals - no less than FOURTEEN in total!

I watched a few of the fights; I saw James Maggs fight his way to silver medal winner in the green belt heavyweight male division. I followed (Big) Mike Phillips through to his bronze position in the male black belt heavyweight division. I'm very proud of Big Mike, he was ten years younger when he won the world championships; doing a comeback and fighting your way to bronze in your thirties is quite an achievement. I saw Cherie Townsend in the final; though she only achieved silver, she was fighting a much larger opponent very skillfully and fiercely.

Tag Team Silver Medal winners 'Russ's Girlz' receive their medals from C.K.Choi

Our kids entries on the Saturday fought really well. Our girl blue belt tag team (including Alanta Fielding and Kathryn Stevens from Bristol North) "Russ's girlz" made it to the tag team finals - bringing home silver! Special congratulations to Griff Townsend getting bronze in the girls individual sparring and even more congratulations to her sister Redd getting silver in the same division. Congratulations also to Jade Clatworthy and Alanta Fielding for both getting bronze in individual sparring. Any students' harshest critic, assistant instructor Mr Stuart Smith, watched our teenage black belts fighting - said this on our facebook page:

"I think everyone should take time to congratulate ALL the students from the clubs who went to the Championships. Win or lose, I cannot single out anyone in particular; everyone who went has proven that they have what it takes to put in the time and effort to go toe to toe in an international event, the largest in Europe, and hold their own. Congratulations to those who are now World Champions, finalists and indeed competitors. Though I will break my own rule on not picking out anyone in particular, the heart and spirit of the Junior Black Belts was especially significant as they were very large divisions. The ferocious manner in which you fought would have made any instructor proud, and I know Mr Martin is. Losing to such world class talent is no shame, just a marker in the ground on which to build on. If anyone ever tells you losing is bad, you tell them to go fight in a World Championships. They don't have the right to comment. Once again, congratulations...!"

Elisha Bogle showing off her gleaming gold medal!

Special congratulations must go to our two new WORLD CHAMPIONS - Miss Samantha Thompson, yellow belt ladies sparring world champion, and Miss Elisha Bogle, red belt ladies sparring world champion! I firmly expect to see Elisha with a ladies world black belt heavyweight medal before too long.

Big congratulations to everyone who just took part, stepping up to the line is like a warrior going to war, it takes courage and spirit and you all showed that! Many thanks from a very proud instructor, Mr Russ Martin.
