Hengrove Classes

Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday at the new Hengrove Park Leisure Centre, The Boulevard, Hengrove Park, Bristol BS14 0JZ (see below for map and directions).

Hengrove (Whitchurch) is our longest running club – it started up in 1993, and we still have some of our original members training! The club benefits from many very experienced black belts who are very keen and highly skilled at passing on their considerable knowledge to the less experienced. The club trained originally in the Whitchurch Community Centre and moved in to the Hengrove Park Leisure Centre when it opened in February 2012. We are proud to be the first martial arts group invited to move into the new centre, which boasts a 150 station gym and 50 metre international swimming pool. We train on two badminton courts in the main sports hall of the leisure centre, which gives us plenty of space with an airy feel and a good floor (important when you’re in bare feet!). The Hengrove/Whitchurch club likes to train hard, but still has a very friendly and approachable atmosphere. The Wednesday adult training sessions are split into junior and senior grades, meaning that more individual attention and grade appropriate instruction can be given to both the junior and senior grades alike.

Update 09/04/21: Post Lockdown Training

From the week beginning Monday April the 12th, we will be doing outdoor classes only at the Hengrove Park Leisure Centre.

Please can all students and parents re-read our club covid safety guidelines page before returning (or bringing your child back) to training. Parents please make sure your child understands what they need to do in order to keep themselves and others safe.

Please ensure you work through our covid questionnaire (for yourself if you are a student, or for your child) before coming to any training sessions.

Mondays and Wednesdays at Hengrove Park (either in the park behind or on the hard standing next to the Leisure Centre depending on the state of the surface) from Monday 12th April – every Monday and Wednesday.
5.30 – 6.15pm children’s class
6.20 – 7pm adult class

These sessions will be hosted by Ms Emma Lloyd. Doboks will not be necessary for outdoor sessions, but please wear your belt. Please wear appropriate clothing (wooly hats and gloves are optional!). If the weather is atrocious, the class will be cancelled – please keep an eye on our facebook page, and if you are unsure, feel free to text Mr Martin. In the event of the class being cancelled, you are of course more than welcome to join in the Zoom class instead!

We will also be continuing to provide Zoom sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays with Mr Martin – these sessions will be open to students from any of Mr Martin’s clubs, and can be attended along side the live classes if you wish.

Mondays & Wednesdays on Zoom
5pm children’s class
6pm All beginners
6.50pm Adults class

To access any of the zoom sessions please go to the online zoom training page.

It is our aim to re-start indoor sessions at the Hengrove Park Leisure Centre for both children and adults at some point during May. We will update this page accordingly when we have more information.

How to find the Hengrove Park Leisure Centre

The Hengrove Park Leisure Centre is a brand new building located within the new development at Hengrove Park (incorporating the new South Bristol Skills Academy and new South Bristol Hospital). From the Hartcliffe roundabout at the end of Hartcliffe way/Airport Road – Hengrove Way, follow the turning South East towards Whitchurch, driving along Whitchurch Lane, go straight over the mini roundabout. At the traffic lights turn left into Hengrove Park, the leisure centre will be directly ahead of you at the end of the Boulevard (you will see the South Bristol Skills Academy on your right). There is a multi-storey car park just in front of the Leisure Centre which gives three hours free parking.
